When someone we love dies, we look for ways to honour them. For many Christian families, sending a memorial prayer to Jerusalem, the city of the resurrection, is a meaningful way to remember a parent, spouse or child. Here is how families do it, and words you can use.
Why Jerusalem?
For Christians, Jerusalem is where Jesus died and rose again. The Church of the Holy Sepulchre and the Garden Tomb both point to the empty tomb and the hope of new life. Sending a prayer there in memory of a loved one is a way of placing their name close to that hope.
When families send a memorial prayer
β’ shortly after the funeral
β’ on the first anniversary of a death
β’ on the loved one's birthday
β’ at Christmas or Easter, when their absence is felt most
A memorial prayer you can use
"Lord Jesus, You are the resurrection and the life. I remember before You [name], whom I love and miss every day. Thank You for the years we shared and for the love they gave. Grant them eternal rest, and comfort all of us who grieve. Until we meet again, keep them in Your peace. Amen."
Sharing the photograph
With Jerusalem Holy Prayer, your memorial prayer is printed, carried by hand to the holy site you choose and photographed. Many families print the dated photograph and keep it with other keepsakes, or share it with relatives who could not be at the funeral.
We are a physical delivery service: we carry your own written words and do not pray on your behalf.
