The church is built around a section of bedrock where tradition says Jesus prayed on the night before his crucifixion.
Beside the church grow some of the oldest olive trees in the world, in the garden known as Gethsemane.
Completed in 1924 with donations from many countries, which is why it is called the Church of All Nations.
At the foot of the Mount of Olives, across the Kidron Valley from the Old City, lies the Garden of Gethsemane. The Gospels tell how Jesus came here with his disciples and prayed, "not my will, but yours be done", on the night of his arrest.
The Church of All Nations, also called the Basilica of the Agony, stands beside the ancient olive trees. Its dark, quiet interior surrounds the Rock of Agony, where pilgrims kneel to pray in times of trial and sorrow.
